What’s different in Wyoming?

Annual license tax considers Wyoming assets

Budget for the annual report and license tax, not only the formation filing. Use the official worksheet for assets located and employed in Wyoming; the minimum fee is not a guarantee that every business pays only $60.

Official guidance →

Set the right reporting calendar

Wyoming entities have an annual report and license tax. The published minimum is $60 or the asset-based calculation, whichever is greater. Confirm the anniversary-month deadline and calculate Wyoming assets using official instructions.

Official guidance →

Check coverage before hiring

Register with Wyoming DWS for a determination of unemployment and workers’ compensation obligations. Mandatory coverage depends on the work, including extra-hazardous industries. Required state workers’ compensation is separate from optional private liability insurance.

Government costs and key deadlines

What to do first in Wyoming

Use this order alongside the detailed checklist below. Work on independent tasks together, but confirm approvals before committing money or opening.

1. Before filing

Define your activities, owners, business name and operating location. Check professional ownership restrictions and compare legal structures. An LLC is a choice to evaluate, not a requirement for every business.

2. Before signing a lease

Describe the exact activity to planning or zoning and the industry regulator. Ask about permitted use, occupancy, inspections and approval timing before committing to premises or renovations.

3. Before taking payments

Complete applicable entity, name, tax and operating registrations. Confirm taxability, required customer documents and insurance. Test payments, receipts and customer follow-up before launch.

4. Before hiring

Resolve worker classification, employer accounts, payroll, new-hire reporting and coverage. Check industry staffing and background-check requirements before anyone starts.

    1

Test demand and choose a structure

    Optional tools

Use paid help where it saves real work.

Government filings come first. These tools are optional—not Wyoming requirements—and should be compared against direct filing, total price, renewals and the complexity of the business.

    Shopify: online selling

Best fit: product businesses that need a hosted storefront, checkout, inventory and order tools in one system.

Test checkout, shipping, returns, fees and AI-shopping visibility with a small catalog before making it your long-term platform.

    Explore Shopify

    Bizee: filing support

Best fit: an owner who wants guided document preparation and an organized filing dashboard.

Compare service charges, registered-agent options and renewals with the current state filing fee and the cost of filing directly.

    Explore Bizee

    LivePlan: planning and projections

Best fit: businesses that need pricing, cash-flow, lender or investor projections before spending heavily.

Use it to pressure-test the model; it does not decide the correct legal or tax structure.

    Explore LivePlan

    MailerLite: email follow-up

Best fit: service businesses, creators and local retailers building permission-based email lists.

Start after the offer and privacy/consent process are clear.

    Explore MailerLite

    Shippo: product shipping

Best fit: Wyoming product sellers comparing labels, carriers and order workflows.

Review shipment volume, platform connections and return needs before choosing a paid plan.

Get a clear answer from your local offices

Find your city and county government’s official website. Look for planning or zoning, business licensing, building inspections and the tax or revenue office. Describe what you will actually do, including home visits, deliveries, storage and online fulfillment.

    Ask these questions

    • Is this activity permitted at this address?
    • Which licenses, tax accounts and inspections apply?
    • Do home occupation, signs, parking or customer visits change the rules?
    • What must be approved before opening, and what renews later?
    • Can you send the requirements and fee schedule in writing?

For a daycare, ask the child-care regulator before adapting a property. For a contractor, ask the trade board and the local building office.
